Marvin Rapaport, MD headed a well-respected dermatology research laboratory at UCLA for 15 years testing hundreds of cosmetics, skincare products, sunscreens, and drugs for national and international companies. He helped develop many of the top-of-the-line household products on the market today. In 1987, with a little nudging from Vicki, Marvin used his formulation secrets to develop a simple, 5 product line for his upscale patients in his own Beverly Hills office.
These Dermatologist-developed were the first of their kind(with many companies to follow suit 10-15 years later). These first products sold well, but Vicki complained that the line lacked teenage-targeted products for her "zitty skin".
Becoming antsy between medical school classes, Vicki decided she didn't want to wait until she was a practicing physician before creating her dream products. She began fantasizing about what she wanted to have in her shower, on her shelves, and to throw in her gym bag.
...then she made it happen..
As the number of products multiplied, the patients continued asking for more. Vicki answered the call developing problem-targeted cleansers and high-tech skin creams. When she desperately needed a matte moisturizer in the hot, humid summers on the east coast, she and her father focused on developing one. When they discovered the perfect formula, Vicki rushed to use it. Amazed at how it helped avoid breakouts, she called it "Zit Down and Shut Up" because it took charge of her troubled skin.
